My Granddaughter Asked Me to Pack Friday Lunch “Just in Case” — Then I Found the Note in Her Backpack
My granddaughter asked if I could pack her lunch on Friday “just in case.” She is seven. Her name is Ellie, and she was doing homework at my kitchen table when she asked for something that did not need a microwave. I thought she meant school lunch. Then she opened her backpack and showed me a plastic bag with one sleeve of crackers, four loose pretzels, and a pencil note that said SAVE FOR TOMORROW. I asked who wrote it. Ellie said her mother did, but she was not supposed to show anyone because people would think Mom was bad at being a mom. Then Ellie looked at the bread on my counter and asked if she could take two sandwiches because one was for her little brother after daycare.
My daughter Janelle worked mornings at a grocery store and cleaned offices at night. She had never asked me for money, even after her divorce. Whenever I offered, she told me they were fine. What she did not tell me was that child support had stopped six months earlier after her ex-husband changed jobs, moved twice, and stopped answering calls from the enforcement office. Friday was the worst day because her pay came Monday, food assistance loaded Saturday, and the money she earned between shifts went first to rent, gas, and daycare. Janelle was stretching food carefully, but Ellie had started noticing. She knew which days had yogurt, which days had only toast, and which days her mother drank coffee instead of eating dinner.
I called Janelle from my kitchen and said, “Your daughter has crackers in her backpack marked SAVE FOR TOMORROW.” There was a long silence. Then she whispered, “Please don’t be mad at me.” I was not mad. I told her to come over after work with both children. She arrived exhausted, embarrassed, and carrying a grocery bag with three bananas and a box of pasta. Ellie ran to her brother and handed him the sandwich she had saved. Janelle sat at my table and cried because her seven-year-old had been quietly planning meals for the family.
